I’m an enthusiast, not a lab. I got interested in heated gear the way most people do: standing still outside, cold, wondering whether the jacket that says “up to 12 hours” actually means it. It doesn’t — not on high, anyway — and once I worked out why, I couldn’t stop checking the math on everything else.
So that’s what I do here. I read the manuals, compile the published specs, and do the arithmetic. I haven’t worn most of this gear and I don’t claim to have. What I can tell you is what a 10,000 mAh pack at 7.4 volts actually gives you when three heating zones are drawing, and whether the number on the box survives contact with a calculator.
No lab coat. No free samples. Just the specs and the math, shown so you can check it.
What Volt Wool does not do
Worth stating in the first person, and stating unhedged:
- We don’t test. No owned units, no drain tests, no field testing, no lab. Every product page here says so before it says anything else.
- We don’t accept free product. Not review units, not samples, not “keep it for the trouble”.
- We don’t take sponsorship. No paid placements, no paid rankings, no brand partnerships. No manufacturer has ever seen a page here before it published.
- We don’t claim credentials. There are none. No certification, no professional body, no expert panel, no medical reviewer.
What we do instead
We compile every specification a manufacturer publishes and convert it into the number that actually matters. Capacity times voltage gives watt-hours. Watt-hours divided by draw gives hours. Manufacturers publish the first half and withhold the second, so we run the advertised runtime backwards to recover it.
Nine competitors were fetched while researching this site. Not one publishes that conversion. Not one. That is a strange gap in a category where the battery is the entire constraint, and filling it is the whole point of this site. The full method is here, worked example and all.
Why a calculation beats a testing claim
There is a version of this site that would rank better in the short term: the one that says “we tested 20 jackets in a Minnesota winter”. We are not going to build it, for two reasons.
The first is that it would be a lie, and a fabricated testing claim is the single easiest thing in this category for a competitor or a search-quality rater to falsify.
The second is that it would be weaker. An unverifiable “we tested it” asks you to trust a stranger. A published calculation asks you to check one — and every input here is linked, every step shown. If our arithmetic is wrong, somebody can prove it. That is what makes it worth reading.
