The toe box is the only zone worth having

Toes go numb first for the same reasons fingers do — poor circulation at the far end of the loop, high surface area, and a boot that is often compressing the blood supply before the cold gets a chance to. Heat applied at the arch or the ankle does very little for a numb toe.

This is why nearly every heated sock puts its element over the toe box and nowhere else. It is a genuine design consensus rather than a cost-cutting one, and a sock that claims full-foot heating is spreading the same 16 watt-hours across more fabric to no benefit.

Energy is capacity times nominal voltage. The ceiling draw is the pack’s own published output current times its voltage. The implied draw runs the maker’s advertised hours backwards. Nothing here is measured — check our working.

Fit and boots, which decide whether they work at all

  • Boot room. A heated sock is thicker than a normal one and adds a cuff pack. If your boots already fit snugly, adding one will restrict circulation — which makes your feet colder, not warmer, regardless of what the element is doing.
  • Reachability. In a laced work boot or a ski boot you cannot reach the cuff button. That is the entire argument for app-controlled socks, and it is a better argument than it sounds.
  • Element position versus your toes. Sizing matters more here than in ordinary socks: if the element sits behind your toes because the sock is too long, it is warming your instep.
  • Wash discipline. Most are machine washable with the pack removed. Most failures are people forgetting the second half of that sentence.

How long do heated socks last?

Do heated socks work in ski boots?
Yes, with two caveats. The boot has to have room — a heated sock plus a cuff pack in a boot that already fits tight will restrict circulation and make things worse. And you will not be able to reach the button once you are buckled in, which is why app-controlled models exist.
Are heated socks or heated insoles better?
Socks put the element directly against the toes and are cheaper. Insoles put the heat under the foot and survive being walked on. For most people the sock wins on contact; for anyone rotating one pair of boots between activities, the insole wins on convenience.
Can you wash heated socks?
Almost all of them, machine, with the battery removed and usually on a gentle cycle. The battery is not washable and washing it is the most common way people destroy a pair.
Why are only my toes heated?
