Buy the vest unless you specifically need heated sleeves or need the heated garment to be your outer layer. A vest runs the same 7.4 V pack into the same chest and back elements with far less fabric to warm, costs less, and lets a coat you already own do the insulating.

They are electrically the same product
This surprises people. A heated jacket and a heated vest from the same maker typically use the same battery, the same carbon-fiber element type and the same three-zone layout: left chest, right chest, mid-back. The jacket has sleeves and a hood; the elements are in the same places.
So the comparison is not about heating technology at all. It is about what the garment does with a fixed energy budget of roughly 38.5 watt-hours, and about what the garment is being asked to replace.

Why the vest gets more from the same watt-hours
A heated garment replaces heat you are losing. The rate you lose it depends on your insulation and your exposed surface area. Neither of those is affected by the battery, and both are affected by the choice of garment.
A vest has less fabric to bring up to temperature and less surface area shedding heat. More importantly, it is designed to be worn under something — so your existing coat's insulation is doing work the vest's battery would otherwise have to do. A heated soft-shell jacket worn as an outer layer is frequently less insulated than the coat it replaced, which means the pack is buying back warmth that better layering gave you for nothing.
Watt-hours, and what they buy
Energy is capacity times nominal voltage. The ceiling draw is the pack’s own published output current times its voltage. The implied draw runs the maker’s advertised hours backwards. Nothing here is measured — check our working.

“Not derivable” means the manufacturer does not publish the figure the sum needs. We leave it blank rather than estimating it, borrowing a number from a similar model, or rounding one into existence. These are ceilings, not promises: cold, wind, movement and pack age all push real runtime below them. Run your own numbers.
The watt-hour figures above are near-identical across both formats, which is the point. Same energy, different amount of work asked of it.
When the jacket is genuinely right
- You want one garment, not two. A heated jacket is a coat. A vest is a layer that needs a coat. If simplicity matters more than efficiency, that is a legitimate preference.
- You need a hood. Very few heated vests have one; most heated jackets do, and some are detachable.
- Your coat is the problem. If your existing outerwear is thin or worn out, a heated jacket replaces two purchases with one.
- Six-zone coverage reaches somewhere a vest does not. The neck, usually. A six-zone jacket with a collar element covers ground a three-zone vest cannot.
The thing neither of them does
Neither warms your hands or your feet, and that is where most people are actually cold. Extremities are at the far end of your circulation, they have the worst surface-area-to-volume ratio on the body, and your body deliberately restricts blood flow to them when your core cools.
That last point is the one worth acting on: warming your core does help your hands indirectly, which is a real argument for buying the vest first. But if numb fingers are the specific complaint, heated glove liners address it directly and cost a fraction of either garment.
The recommendation
Start with a vest under a coat you already own. It is the most efficient shape in the category, the cheapest real entry point, and it leaves you free to add heated gloves or heated socks for the parts of you that are genuinely cold. Move to a jacket when you have a specific reason — a hood, a worn-out coat, or sleeves you can prove you need.
