Heating zones: which ones are worth the energy they cost
Zone count is the number this category advertises because it is easy to compare. Here is what each zone actually buys, and what it takes from the others.

Zones are individual heating elements, wired in parallel. More zones on the same battery means the same watt-hours divided further — not more heat. A zone is worth paying for when it covers somewhere you are genuinely cold, and the collar is the one that most often qualifies.
The claim, and the arithmetic behind it
A six-zone jacket is advertised beside a three-zone jacket as though it were twice the product. It is not. Zones are elements, elements are wired in parallel, and for a given per-element output the total draw is roughly the sum.
So on a fixed pack, six zones means one of two things: the pack empties roughly twice as fast at the same per-element warmth, or the controller holds the same total draw and each element runs cooler. Which one happens is a controller design question that no maker publishes.
The standard three, and what they do

The pattern is clear once it is laid out. The first three zones are the product. The fourth is worth paying for if it is the collar. Beyond that you are dividing a fixed budget across areas that were probably not your problem.

Independent circuits change the calculation
There is one design that genuinely improves on the zone-count trade, and it is worth knowing about: splitting zones onto separately-controlled circuits.
Consider pocket heat. Standing still at a touchline you want warm hands and your core is coping. Walking back to the car you want the reverse. On a single circuit you cannot have that — everything is on together, spending battery on the zone you do not currently need.
Dual control lets you run one and not the other, which converts a coverage feature into an efficiency one. It is the strongest argument for a six-zone jacket, and considerably better reasoning than 'six is more than three'.
How to read an element diagram
- Count the panels in the picture, not the number in the headline. Listings sometimes count a single wraparound panel as two zones.
- Check whether the collar is heated or just insulated. Insulated collars are common and are not a zone.
- Check whether pocket heat is on its own circuit. If it is not, you cannot use it selectively and it will drain the pack whenever the jacket is on.
- Do not assume sleeves are heated. They almost never are, on any jacket, at any price.
- Read the pack capacity beside the zone count. Four zones on a smaller pack is less energy per element than three on a larger one — the numbers only mean something together.
Watt-hours, and what they buy
Energy is capacity times nominal voltage. The ceiling draw is the pack’s own published output current times its voltage. The implied draw runs the maker’s advertised hours backwards. Nothing here is measured — check our working.

“Not derivable” means the manufacturer does not publish the figure the sum needs. We leave it blank rather than estimating it, borrowing a number from a similar model, or rounding one into existence. These are ceilings, not promises: cold, wind, movement and pack age all push real runtime below them. Run your own numbers.
The efficient answer
For most people, three well-placed zones on the largest pack available, worn under a coat that provides insulation, beats six zones on a smaller pack worn as an outer layer. That is the same conclusion the rest of this site keeps reaching from different directions, and it is not a coincidence — it all follows from a fixed energy budget.

- What is dual-zone control on a heated jacket?
- Two independently controlled heating circuits, typically core and hand pockets. It lets you run one without the other, which turns a coverage feature into an efficiency one — the strongest argument for a higher zone count.
- Is a 4-zone vest better than a 3-zone vest?
- Only if the fourth zone is the collar and the pack has not shrunk to pay for it. Four zones on a 35.5 watt-hour pack is less energy per element than three on a 38.5 watt-hour one — read both numbers together.
