- How long does a heated jacket really last on high?
- For the common 7.4 V, 5,200 mAh pack, about two hours. That pack holds 38.5 watt-hours, and its own published 2.5 A output rating caps delivery at 18.5 watts — 38.5 divided by 18.5 is two hours five minutes. The 8-to-10-hour figure in the advertising is the lowest setting.
- Why do heated jackets advertise 'up to 10 hours'?
- Because on the lowest setting they will do it, and the words 'up to' are doing the work. It is not false. It answers a question you are unlikely to be asking, because you switched the jacket on to be warm rather than to be slightly less cold for a long time.
- How do I convert mAh to watt-hours?
- Divide the milliamp-hours by 1,000 to get amp-hours, then multiply by nominal voltage. A 5,200 mAh pack at 7.4 V is 5.2 × 7.4 = 38.5 watt-hours. The calculator does it for you.
- Why does nobody publish heated clothing wattage?
- We cannot tell you their reasoning, only the effect: without a draw figure you cannot convert a battery into hours, so you have to accept the maker's chosen runtime number instead. Nine competitors were fetched while researching this site and not one publishes the draw either.
- Is a higher mAh battery always better?
- Only at the same voltage. Milliamp-hours are half an energy figure — a 5,000 mAh pack at 7.4 V holds nearly twice the energy of a 5,000 mAh pack at 3.7 V. Always compare watt-hours.
- Why is a 20V MAX battery actually 18V?
- US labeling quotes the maximum voltage measured off the charger with no load. DEWALT prints it on its own packaging: maximum initial voltage is 20 volts, nominal is 18. The nominal figure is what belongs in a watt-hour calculation, and using the label overstates the energy by about 11%.
- Can I use a bigger battery to get more runtime?
- Yes, if the voltage and connector match. More watt-hours at the same voltage runs the same elements for longer. It does not make them hotter — that is set by the garment's draw, not by the pack.
- Why is my real runtime shorter than the calculation?
- Three things stack up, all pushing the same way. Cold reduces the usable capacity of a lithium pack. Every charge cycle takes a little more, permanently. And because the controller holds a target temperature, wind and movement make it run the element harder. Our figures are ceilings, not promises.
- Should I buy a heated jacket or a heated vest?
- A vest, in most cases. It runs the same pack into the same chest and back elements, costs less, leaves your arms free, and layers under a coat you already own — so your coat provides the insulation instead of the battery having to replace it. The full comparison.
- Are more heating zones better?
- Not on the same battery. Zones are wired in parallel, so more of them means the same watt-hours divided further — more coverage, not more heat. A zone earns its keep when it reaches somewhere you are genuinely cold, and the collar is the one that most often qualifies.
- Do heated jackets heat the sleeves?
- Almost never, at any price. The standard layout is both chest panels and the mid-back, on jackets and vests alike. Check the element diagram rather than assuming a jacket heats more of you than a vest does.
- What is the best value heated clothing to buy first?
- Heated glove liners if your hands are the complaint, or a heated vest under a coat you already own if it is your core. Both cost less than a heated jacket and address the problem more directly.
- Are heated gloves or heated liners better?
- For anyone who needs to use their hands, liners — they keep your existing glove's insulation and fit plus your dexterity, and they stay on when the outer glove comes off. For motorcycling or long stationary cold, a full heated glove or mitten is warmer.
- Is a tool-battery heated jacket worth it?
- If you already own the platform, yes — swapping packs is the only real answer to heated clothing's short runtime. If you do not, you are buying a jacket plus a battery plus a charger plus a platform commitment, which costs considerably more than a consumer jacket and a spare pack.
- Should I size up in a heated jacket?
- Only for the layer you will genuinely wear underneath. An element warms you by conduction into whatever it touches, so extra room means the garment is heating an air gap. This is the opposite of how you would size a ski shell.
- Why does my heated jacket not feel warm?
- Fit is the most common cause — if there is a gap between the element and your body, the jacket is heating air. Check the chest panels sit against you and that the back panel stays in contact when you move. After that, check the connector for lint.
- Can you wash heated clothing?
- Most shell and fleece garments and most heated socks can be machine washed cold on a gentle cycle with the battery removed and the zips closed. Never tumble dry, never wring, never dry clean. The full care guide.
- My heated jacket stopped working. What should I check first?
- The connector, before anything else. Compacted lint in the barrel is by far the most common cause and takes seconds to clear. Then the charger rather than the pack, then temperature, then pack age, then the element. The troubleshooting order.
- How long do heated clothing batteries last?
- Makers commonly quote several hundred charge cycles. In practice expect a noticeable capacity drop after two or three seasons of regular use. That is normal lithium behavior rather than a defect, and replacement packs cost far less than the garment.
- How much does it cost to charge a heated jacket?
- About 0.7 cents for a standard 38.5 watt-hour pack, at the US average residential rate of 18.34 cents per kilowatt-hour. Charged daily from November through March that is roughly $1.07 for the whole season. The cost that adds up is replacement batteries, not electricity.
- Can you take a heated jacket on a plane?
- Yes. The garment is unrestricted; the battery carries the rule. The FAA allows lithium packs up to 100 watt-hours in carry-on without approval, and every mainstream heated apparel pack converts to well under that. Spares must be carried on, never checked.
- Are heated jackets safe?
- From established brands with certified packs, yes for most people — the elements run at low power and the controller limits temperature. Look for a specific standard on the battery such as UL2056 rather than a vague safety claim, and wear a layer underneath on the higher settings.
- Are heated vests safe for pacemakers?
- That is a question for your cardiologist and your device's manufacturer, and we will not answer it. A clearance from a website is worth nothing. We publish the garment's specifications so you can bring real numbers to that conversation.
- Do you test the products you recommend?
- No, and we say so on every page rather than in a footer. No owned units, no lab, no drain tests, no field use. What we do is compile published specifications and convert them into watt-hours and hours, showing every step so you can check it.
- Why should I trust a site that has not tested anything?
- Because you can check it. Every input is linked to its source and every calculation is shown, so if our arithmetic is wrong somebody can prove it. An unverifiable claim of hands-on testing asks you to trust a stranger; a published calculation asks you to check one. Our methodology.
