What it costs to run heated clothing
The electricity is almost free. Nobody publishes the figure, so here it is — along with the cost that genuinely does add up.

Charging a 38.5 watt-hour heated jacket battery costs about 0.7 cents at the US average residential rate of 18.34 cents per kilowatt-hour. Even charged daily all winter that is under a dollar a season. The cost that matters is battery replacement, not electricity.
The arithmetic
Electricity is billed in kilowatt-hours. A heated clothing battery is measured in watt-hours — a thousandth of the same unit. So the calculation is short:
Seventy-one hundredths of one cent. That is the whole answer, and it is why nobody publishes it — there is no marketing value in a number that small, and no reason for a buyer to worry about it.

Charging is not perfectly efficient, so real wall draw is somewhat higher than the pack's capacity — but even allowing generously for that, every figure here stays trivially small.
The most expensive line in that table is two dollars and eight cents, for the largest pack in the category charged every single day from November through March. For context, that is less than one cup of coffee for an entire winter of daily use.

The comparison people actually want
The reason this figure is interesting is not the number itself but the contrast. Heated clothing is often mentally filed alongside space heaters, and the two are not remotely in the same category.
A heated jacket draws single-digit watts. A domestic space heater draws around 1,500 watts. That is roughly two orders of magnitude — running a space heater for one hour uses more electricity than charging a heated jacket every day for a month.
Which is a genuine argument for heated clothing that has nothing to do with warmth: heating the person rather than the room is dramatically less energy, because you are not also heating the air, the furniture and the walls. The heated garment's small battery is a feature of the approach, not a limitation of the technology.
The cost that does add up
Batteries. Lithium packs lose capacity with every charge cycle, and after two or three seasons of regular use the drop is noticeable. A replacement pack costs meaningfully more than the electricity you will put through it over its entire life — by orders of magnitude.
So the real running cost of heated clothing is a pack every few years, and the way to reduce it is to look after the one you have:
- Store at around half charge in the off-season. Stored full or stored flat ages the cells faster.
- Store indoors, not in a freezing garage or a hot car.
- Charge at room temperature. Cold charging is hard on lithium, and some packs refuse it outright.
- Run the lowest setting that works. Fewer full cycles is fewer cycles of wear, and it is also the only free way to extend a day's runtime.
- Buy spares while your model is current. Replacement packs vanish from the market before garments wear out, and a garment with no available pack is finished regardless of its condition.

Watt-hours, and what they buy
Energy is capacity times nominal voltage. The ceiling draw is the pack’s own published output current times its voltage. The implied draw runs the maker’s advertised hours backwards. Nothing here is measured — check our working.
