Under $200 the elements and the packs are broadly the same as the tier above — what disappears is disclosure. Budget listings tend to publish a runtime claim and nothing you can check it against. The best value at this price is usually not a jacket at all but a heated vest under a coat you already own.

What actually gets cheaper

It is worth being precise, because the assumption that a cheap heated jacket has a weaker heating element is mostly wrong. Carbon-fiber heating elements are inexpensive and the technology is mature. What varies at this price is the shell fabric, the pack quality and certification, the fit, and — most consequentially — how much the seller is willing to tell you.

That last one is not a small thing on this site. Every figure we publish comes from converting a published capacity and voltage into watt-hours. The better budget play: change format, not brand

Given a fixed budget under $200, the highest-value purchase in this category is a heated vest worn under a coat you already own. The reasoning is the same energy argument that runs through the whole site: a vest heats the same core zones with less fabric to warm, and your existing coat contributes insulation that the vest's battery would otherwise have to replace.

The second-best is a set of heated glove liners, for a completely different reason: they solve the problem most people actually have. Cold hands are the most common complaint, hands are the hardest thing to warm passively, and liners cost a fraction of a jacket. Heated glove liners makes the case in full.

“Not derivable” means the manufacturer does not publish the figure the sum needs. We leave it blank rather than estimating it, borrowing a number from a similar model, or rounding one into existence. The four checks that survive a low price

  1. Is the pack capacity published anywhere? Product page, brand battery guide, or the replacement-pack listing. If none of the three, walk away — you cannot convert what is not stated.
  2. Is the voltage published? Milliamp-hours alone is half an energy figure and tells you nothing comparable.
  3. Is there a certification you can look up? UL, CE, FCC. A lithium pack worn against your body for a winter deserves a mark you can verify.
  4. Are replacement packs sold? The pack fails long before the garment does. A jacket whose battery you cannot replace is a two-season purchase however cheap it was.

Anything under $80 with a four-figure runtime claim
At the very bottom of the market, listings routinely pair a large claimed capacity with no voltage, no output current and no brand you can look up. There is nothing to convert and nobody to hold to it. The risk is not that the jacket is cold — it is that an unverified lithium pack sits against your chest for a winter.
Budget jackets bought as outerwear
Under $200 the shell is the first thing to be economized. A thin, uninsulated face fabric means the element is spending battery replacing heat the jacket is letting straight out. At this price the vest-under-your-own-coat route gives you far more warmth per dollar.

Are cheap heated jackets any good?
The heating elements are usually fine — carbon-fiber elements are cheap and mature. What gets cut at this price is the shell fabric, the pack certification and, most importantly, how much the seller publishes. A jacket you cannot convert into watt-hours is a jacket you cannot evaluate.
What is the best heated clothing under $200?
Usually not a jacket. A heated vest under a coat you already own gives you the same core zones for less money and lets your coat do the insulating. Heated glove liners are the other strong answer, because cold hands are the problem most people are actually trying to solve.
Is it safe to buy a very cheap heated jacket?
The concern at the very bottom of the market is not warmth, it is an uncertified lithium pack worn against your body all winter. Look for a UL, CE or FCC mark you can actually look up, and treat a large capacity claim with no voltage and no verifiable brand as a reason to stop.
Do cheaper heated jackets have shorter battery life?
Not necessarily — capacity is what it is, and some budget packs are physically larger than premium ones. The difference is that a budget listing often will not tell you the capacity or the voltage, so the runtime claim cannot be checked against anything.
Can I use a better battery with a budget heated jacket?
