A men's heated vest runs the same 7.4 V pack as a heated jacket — around 38.5 watt-hours in the common configuration — into three or four elements over the chest and back. Because there is far less fabric to warm and your existing coat provides the insulation, the same energy goes noticeably further than it does in a jacket.
The efficiency case, stated once and properly
A heated garment does not manufacture warmth out of nothing. It replaces heat you are losing, at a rate set by the draw of its elements and limited by the energy in its pack. Everything that reduces your heat loss makes that fixed pack last longer and feel warmer, and everything that increases it does the opposite.
A vest is the most efficient shape available. The elements sit over the torso, where warming has a systemic effect. There are no sleeves adding surface area and fabric mass. Watt-hours per zone
Zone count is the number this category advertises because it is easy to compare. Watt-hours per zone is the number that tells you something, and it is trivially derivable from figures the better makers publish.
Watt-hours, and what they buy
Energy is capacity times nominal voltage. The ceiling draw is the pack’s own published output current times its voltage. The implied draw runs the maker’s advertised hours backwards. Nothing here is measured — check our working.

“Not derivable” means the manufacturer does not publish the figure the sum needs. We leave it blank rather than estimating it, borrowing a number from a similar model, or rounding one into existence. These are ceilings, not promises: cold, wind, movement and pack age all push real runtime below them. Run your own numbers.
Read that table with the zone counts on the product cards beside it. A 38.5 watt-hour pack across three zones is about 12.8 watt-hours per element. A 35.5 watt-hour pack across four zones is 8.9. That is a 30% difference in energy per element, and it runs in the opposite direction to the zone count the marketing leads with.
This is not an argument that four zones is worse. It is an argument that the two numbers have to be read together, and that only one of them is printed on the box. If the fourth zone is a collar element and your neck is what is cold, the trade is worth it. If it is a fourth torso panel, it is not.
What to actually check before buying
- Whether the pack capacity is published, and at what voltage. Without both there is nothing to convert.
- Where the fourth zone is, if there is one. A collar element changes the product. A fourth chest panel does not.
- How it recharges. USB-C means the pack survives losing its original charger, which is how most of these end up in a drawer.
- Insulation type. Down holds heat best and hates moisture. Quilted synthetic is the safe middle. A bare shell holds almost nothing and needs a coat over it.
- Where the battery pocket sits. Inside-chest is warm and awkward to reach; hem pockets are easy to reach and colder, which slightly reduces usable capacity in hard cold.
What we would skip, and why
- A bare shell vest bought as an outer layer
- An uninsulated shell vest worn on its own in wind is the least efficient way to spend 38 watt-hours. The element is replacing heat the garment is letting straight out. The same vest under a coat you already own is a genuinely good purchase; the same vest as your outer layer is a battery fighting the weather with no help.
- Four-zone vests bought purely for the zone count
- Four elements on a smaller pack is less energy per element than three on a bigger one. The four-zone models here are worth it specifically because one of those zones is the collar. Bought for the number alone, they are a downgrade.
Our criteria, and what we did not do
- Watt-hours per zone, not zones. We divide the pack's energy by the element count so a four-zone vest on a small pack cannot hide behind a bigger number.
- Insulation counts as power, because a vest that holds heat needs less of it.
- Published capacity and voltage decide whether a product is rankable at all.
- Recharge standard matters. USB-C removes the single most common reason these packs get abandoned.

- On the common 7.4 V, 5,200 mAh pack the maker claims 2-3 hours on high and 8-10 on low. The pack's published 2.5 A output rating caps delivery at about 18.5 watts, which independently puts the floor a little over two hours — the two figures agreeing is a good sign.
- Is a 4-zone heated vest better than a 3-zone?
- Only if the extra zone is somewhere you are actually cold, and only if the pack has not shrunk to pay for it. Four zones on a 35.5 watt-hour pack is less energy per element than three zones on a 38.5 watt-hour one. Read both numbers together.
- Should I wear a heated vest over or under my coat?
- Under, in almost every case. Your coat's insulation does work the battery would otherwise have to do, so the same pack lasts longer and feels warmer. Wearing it as an outer layer in wind is the least efficient way to use it.
- Are heated vests worth it?
