Running heated clothing off a tool battery

Tool platforms turn a runtime problem into a logistics problem — if you already own the platform. Here is what each pack actually holds.

Tool-platform heated jackets run off the same packs as your cordless tools, which turns a two-hour runtime into a swap. The packs themselves are small: an M12 2.0 Ah holds 21.6 Wh at 10.8 V nominal, less than a consumer heated jacket's 38.5 Wh. The advantage is quantity, not capacity.

Why trades workers end up here

The runtime arithmetic on a consumer heated jacket is unforgiving: 38.5 watt-hours, capped at about 18.5 watts by the pack's own published output, gives a floor of just over two hours. For an eight-hour outdoor shift there are only two answers — carry spares, or use a platform where spares already exist.

The second is genuinely elegant when it applies. If there are four charged M12 packs in the van because your impact driver needs them, the jacket's runtime stops being a specification and becomes a ten-second interruption.

Computed as nominal volts x amp-hours. Milwaukee markets M12 as 12 V and DEWALT markets its platform as 20V MAX; both are peak-charge labels. DEWALT states the distinction on its own packaging.

Two things stand out. The compact packs most people carry are small — the M12 2.0 Ah holds barely half what a consumer heated jacket pack does. And the high-capacity packs are large enough to change the conversation entirely: a DEWALT 5.0 Ah holds 90 watt-hours, more than double the apparel standard.

The catch on the high-capacity packs is weight and bulk. A 5.0 Ah pack in a jacket pocket is a real presence, and the heated garments designed for tool platforms are built around the compact packs. Fitting the big one is often not an option.

On wattage: The 17-hour claim is a pack-level figure. Divide the pack's energy by 17 and you get the draw that claim assumes, which is far below what the pack can deliver at full output.

Adapters, and what we will and will not say about them

Third-party adapters exist that convert a tool pack to the barrel connector used by consumer heated apparel. They are widely sold and people use them.

Here is the problem, stated as an electrical fact rather than a warning. A consumer heated garment is built for 7.4 volts. An M12 pack is 10.8 volts nominal and higher off the charger; a 20V MAX pack is 18 volts nominal and 20 off the charger. Connecting a higher-voltage source to a garment expecting 7.4 volts, without a regulating step-down between them, applies more voltage than the element was designed for.

Some adapters regulate. Some are passive. The listings do not reliably distinguish, and we have no way to determine which is which from published information — so we are not going to recommend a specific adapter or tell you that any given one is safe. What we can tell you is what to check for: whether the adapter states a regulated output voltage matching your garment's input, and whether that claim comes with a certification you can look up.

The platform decision, if you do not already own one

For someone with no cordless platform, buying into one for a heated jacket is the most expensive route into heated clothing that exists. Jacket, plus battery, plus charger, plus a commitment to a battery family — against a consumer jacket and a spare pack, which does the same job for less.

The arithmetic

Watt-hours, and what they buy

Energy is capacity times nominal voltage. The ceiling draw is the pack’s own published output current times its voltage. The implied draw runs the maker’s advertised hours backwards. Nothing here is measured — check our working.

In a Milwaukee M12 heated garment, yes — that is what it is built for. In a consumer 7.4 V heated jacket via an adapter, the voltages do not match and you are relying on the adapter to regulate. We cannot tell you which adapters do that reliably, so we do not recommend the approach.
How many watt-hours is an M12 2.0Ah battery?
21.6 watt-hours — 10.8 volts nominal times 2.0 amp-hours. Milwaukee markets the platform as 12 V, which is the peak-charge figure; using it would give 24 Wh and overstate the pack by 11%.
Is a DEWALT 20V MAX battery good for heated clothing?
In DEWALT's own heated garments, yes, and the larger packs hold a lot of energy — a 5.0 Ah is 90 watt-hours at 18 V nominal, more than double a typical apparel pack. Bulk in a jacket pocket is the practical limit.

Which tool platform is best for heated clothing?
Whichever one you already own. The entire advantage is that spare packs already exist and are already charged. Buying into a platform for a jacket alone costs considerably more than a consumer jacket plus a spare battery.
