M12 or 20V MAX for a heated jacket?
Two tool platforms, two labeling conventions and a 66% difference in energy that neither box makes obvious.

Converted at nominal voltage, a Milwaukee M12 2.0 Ah pack holds 21.6 Wh and a DEWALT 20V MAX 2.0 Ah holds 36 Wh — a 66% difference the labels obscure, because both platforms quote peak charge voltage. In practice the platform you already own wins, because the whole advantage is spare packs.
The labels are not comparable. The nominal voltages are.
Milwaukee calls it M12 and DEWALT calls it 20V MAX. Neither figure is the working voltage. DEWALT states this outright on its own packaging: "Maximum initial battery voltage (measured without a workload) is 20 volts. Nominal voltage is 18." M12 is a three-cell pack and works out the same way, at 10.8 V nominal.
Do the arithmetic with the labels and you get 24 Wh and 40 Wh. Do it with the nominal voltages and you get 21.6 Wh and 36 Wh. The second pair is the honest one, and the gap between platforms is larger than the labels suggest.

Energy is not actually the deciding factor
Having made the case that the platforms differ, here is the part that matters more: it mostly does not change the decision.
The reason to run a heated jacket off a tool battery is not that tool batteries are large — the compact ones are smaller than a consumer apparel pack. It is that you own several, they are already charged, and swapping one takes ten seconds with gloves on. The runtime question stops being a specification and becomes a habit.
Which means the answer to "M12 or 20V MAX" is almost always "whichever is already in your van". A platform you own with four charged packs beats a platform you do not own with better arithmetic, by a wide margin.
If you genuinely have both
- Weight and bulk in a pocket. The M12 compact is markedly smaller and lighter, and in a chest pocket that is a real comfort difference over a shift.
- Energy per swap. The 20V MAX 2.0 Ah holds two-thirds more than the M12 2.0 Ah, so fewer interruptions.
- The high-capacity option. A 20V MAX 5.0 Ah at 90 Wh is more than double any consumer apparel pack — if the garment will take it and you will carry it.
- Garment availability. Milwaukee's heated line is broader and more established than most tool brands'. That often settles it before the battery does.
Watt-hours, and what they buy
Energy is capacity times nominal voltage. The ceiling draw is the pack’s own published output current times its voltage. The implied draw runs the maker’s advertised hours backwards. Nothing here is measured — check our working.

“Not derivable” means the manufacturer does not publish the figure the sum needs. We leave it blank rather than estimating it, borrowing a number from a similar model, or rounding one into existence. These are ceilings, not promises: cold, wind, movement and pack age all push real runtime below them. Run your own numbers.
If you own neither
Then buy neither, for a jacket. Buying into a cordless platform to power a garment means a jacket, plus a battery, plus a charger, plus a commitment to a battery family — against a consumer heated jacket and a spare pack, which delivers the same warmth for less.

- Is Milwaukee M12 or DEWALT 20V better for a heated jacket?
- Whichever you already own, because the advantage is having spare packs already charged. On energy, a 20V MAX 2.0 Ah holds 36 Wh against the M12 2.0 Ah's 21.6 Wh at nominal voltage — but that rarely outweighs owning the platform.
- How many watt-hours is a 20V MAX 2.0Ah battery?
- 36 watt-hours — 18 volts nominal times 2.0 amp-hours. Using the 20 V label would give 40 Wh, which overstates it. DEWALT prints the nominal figure on its own packaging.
- Can I use a DEWALT battery on a Milwaukee heated jacket?
- No. The battery interfaces are proprietary and the voltages differ. Third-party adapters exist but the listings do not reliably state whether output is regulated, so we do not recommend that route.
- Is a tool battery heated jacket worth it?
- If you already own the platform, yes — swapping packs is the only real answer to heated clothing's short runtime. If you do not own it, a consumer jacket plus a spare pack costs considerably less for the same result.
- Which tool battery lasts longest in a heated jacket?
- The largest one your garment will physically accept. A 20V MAX 5.0 Ah at 90 Wh and an M12 6.0 Ah at 64.8 Wh both far exceed a consumer apparel pack, but the garments are designed around the compact packs and the big ones often will not fit the pocket.
