The M12 TOUGHSHELL runs a Milwaukee M12 pack — 21.6 watt-hours for the 2.0 Ah at 10.8 V nominal, the smallest battery on this site. Milwaukee's own 'up to 8 hours' claim implies a 2.7-watt draw. The jacket is worth buying anyway, because you already own four packs and swapping one takes ten seconds.

Converted at 10.8 V nominal rather than the marketed 12 V. US lithium packs are labeled at peak charge voltage; DEWALT states the same convention on its own packaging. Using 12 V would give 24 Wh and overstate the pack by 11%.
Two numbers deserve a moment. 21.6 watt-hours is 56% of what a standard consumer heated jacket pack holds — this is genuinely the smallest battery on the site. And Milwaukee's own eight-hour claim, divided into that energy, implies a draw of about 2.7 watts.
2.7 watts is a very small amount of heat. It is the low setting, and Milwaukee is entitled to advertise it — but it is not the setting anyone reaches for at seven in the morning in February. We would rather put that in a table than leave you to discover it on site.

Why the small pack does not sink it
Because the runtime question changes shape entirely when spares are free. Every other jacket on this site poses the problem as "how long does this last?" The M12 poses it as "how many packs are charged in the van?", and the answer is usually four.
Swapping an M12 pack takes about ten seconds and can be done with gloves on, standing up, without unzipping anything. Two swaps across a shift is a non-event. Compare that with a consumer jacket, where a spare pack is an extra purchase, an extra charger and an extra thing to remember.
There is also the XC option. A 4.0 Ah M12 pack holds 43.2 watt-hours — more than a consumer apparel pack — and a 6.0 Ah holds 64.8. If the jacket's pocket takes them, the energy argument reverses completely.
What the jacket is, beyond the battery
This is the part where the TOUGHSHELL separates itself, and it has nothing to do with electronics. It is built as work clothing: a heavier stretch-polyester shell designed for abrasion rather than for a catalog photograph, with the wear points reinforced where site jackets actually die.
That matters more than a spec sheet suggests. The heating element in these garments routinely outlives the fabric around it, and a heated jacket whose elbows have gone through in one season is an expensive lesson. A consumer soft shell is not built for the same life.
Who should skip it
- Anyone who does not already own M12 tools. Buying a jacket, a battery, a charger and a platform commitment is the most expensive route into heated clothing there is. A consumer jacket plus a spare pack costs far less.
- Anyone buying the jacket-only SKU without noticing. Several listings ship without a battery or charger. It is easy to miss at checkout and it changes the price substantially.
- Anyone who wants light and packable. This is a work jacket. It is heavier than a soft shell and it is meant to be.
- Anyone whose neck is the cold part. Three zones, no collar element.
